Troy People Concerned is a service organization supporting Troy residents in times of need with assistance, information and referrals.

“Due to the recent economic downturn in metro Detroit, the entire 2010 & 2011 calendar years were busy ones for Troy People Concerned,” Doris Nelson Troy People Concerned Director said. “This non-profit organization continues to receive calls for assistance from people who have lost their jobs or are facing serious medical or other financial situations. In some cases, TPC was able to help Troy residents by providing assistance with utility bills, rent or mortgage payments. “

Some examples of TPC client assistance for 2011:
• A single mom with medical disabilities and a nine- year-old daughter requested help with the electric bill. They had recently left a shelter, qualified for subsidized housing, but fell behind in paying the electric bill due to buying medication for the daughter. After verifying, TPC referred her to various prescription programs, and paid her $204 electric bill.

• A man lost his job and had to have surgery making him temporarily unemployable. After verification, TPC approved paying $200 towards his rent.

• A single 42-year-old man with a 20-year-old son called for assistance for the $708 rent bill. He had a liver transplant over 10 years ago and medical complications during that time have made it difficult to hold a job. The son is currently looking for work. Upon confirmation, another agency agreed to pay half of the rent and TPC paid the other half.

• A single 45-year-old father with four children ages 7-14 lost his home due to a fire. TPC assisted him with $400 in gift cards to help purchase necessities for their home.

Big Beaver United Methodist Church, Central Woodward Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, Lutheran Church of the Master, Northminster Presbyterian Church and St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church choirs presented a repetoir of joyous songs that lifted each attendee into the spirit of Christmas.  In between songs sung by the choir, the audience was invited to join in to sing Christmas favorites, such as Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, O Come All Ye Faithful and Silent Night among others.

The event was well attended and a basket was passed to anyone who wished to make a donation.  All contributions were generously given to Troy People Concerned!  As always, Troy People Concerned will be good stewards of these generous donations and assure you that this money will go to your Troy neighbors-in-need.  This donation from the Third Annual Carols and Choirs Concert helps TPC continue to make available the programs that are so important to our at-need residents.
